Upcoming Series: Romans 13
Monday, April 07, 2008

I am working on a paper on Romans 13. Last time I posted a series here, Michael Westmoreland-White gave me some advice which I am taking this time around. Once I have finished the essay, I will begin posting it incrementally over a period of days, perhaps weeks, to allow you straggling readers of mine the time to absorb it. I will be posting it here in the hopes that I'll get some good critique. I suspect I've made some errors and generalizations of some people's positions, and I look to y'all to call me on the carpet for it all. Eventually, this project will turn into a 300-400 page monograph, so if you're one of the few who are interested in my success as a scholar, please do throw in your $2,000,000 worth.

The paper will consist predominantly of an overview of the vast majority of the interpretive approaches to Romans 13, followed by my own exegetical and contextual considerations, before concluding in a rather open-ended fashion (I suspect). So keep a look out. I need to have it done this week, but this post right here is one example of the many forms of procrastination I've embraced lately.

Peace.

I am looking forward to it as well.

so, you are not just arguing for a specific interpretation, but you are summarizing many differing interpretations? sounds like a good idea.

oh and I think you might be interested in Greg Boyd's blog ( http://gregboyd.blogspot.com/ ) he has been dealing with the question of OT warfare. His last three posts have dealt with Eller's view, which I am sure you are more than familiar with.

I hope the Stark household is doing well.

peace be with you.

Bring it on! I have nothing to say right now, so I'm glad you're blogging again. It gives me something to link. :)

Thom, I have $50. Will that help?

How much in late fees did I incur?

Thom - If you want to find some more justifiable opportunities for procrastination, you might want to check out Brian's post over at our blog, "To Hell With Romans 13."

Just to keep things moving or whatever.

Wirkungsgeschichte, nice!

What are the primary dates/periods you will be examining?

WIll you order by chronology, or major trends of interp and showcase specific examples under one of those headings?

Have fun!

Andrew,

Thanks for the link. Brian has written a great piece, and I'm thinking about citing it. Thanks again!

Hey, JPB.

I've been thinking about you lately. Yes, I'm trying to put Wirkungsgeschichte to work for me, but we'll see what results. Lord knows. Unfortunately, I'm not in this effort spending a great deal of time in the Patristics and with the Reformers. Although I briefly cite Basil and Augustine, mostly I'm engaged with contemporary scholarship, from Dodd to Dunn, as it were. And, yes, I will be organizing by trends of interp., showcasing representatives. I am interested in the kind of criticism I'll get back in regard to how I've categorized different scholars' positions. Obviously generalizations are a problem with a "major trends" approach, so I hope to be corrected a bit. When it comes time to do the monograph, I'll have to decide whether a chronological approach might be more fruitful, or perhaps a major trends approach in which I deal more exhaustively than I am able to here with the nuances of each thinker's thought. I have somewhere between 14-16 different approaches I'm dealing with. Many of them can be and are frequently combined into a broader approach, and often a scholar will fit into more than one approach, sometimes three or four or even more. Off the top of my head, the approaches I have are:

Imperial Perspective (B. Blumenfeld)
Ideal Government (various)
Divine Command Clause (Basil, Augustine)
Dangers of Anarchy (various)
Angelic Powers (O. Cullmann)
Stoic Reading (C.E.B. Cranfield)
Spanish Mission Fundraising (R. Jewett)
Synagogue Rulers (M. Nanos)
Benefaction Convention (B. Winter)
Tax Revolt Background (various)
Social Volatility (various)
Ordered Not Ordained (J. Yoder)
Ordered by YHWH, not Jupiter (Wright, Jewett, et al)
Apocalyptic Expectation (various)
Hidden Transcripts (W. Herzog, et al)

I hope you enjoyed this spoiler. I'm going to see about suing myself in court for the leak. Maybe I could get some money out of me.
